IN SEARCH OF…….

DIVERSITY

We are enlisting the help of all who read this web site and/or subscribe to Pedlines in helping us to build a database that visitors to the site can access.

The name of the game is diversity.

By this, we mean that we want the names, locations, stud fees, contact numbers and any other information you may have (good photos are welcome) of sires who are NOT tail-male to any Northern Dancer line or any Raise a Native line.  This does not mean those horses already listed in the one of the two main (Blood Horse or Thoroughbred Times) stallion books.  Anybody can find those horses.

We are looking to compile a database of regional or unlisted/unadvertised sires from the Fairway; *Herbager/Son-In-Law; Teddy/Damascus; *Pharamond/Buckpasser; Red God/*Nasrullah, Hyperion, *Princequillo, etc. etc. lines.  Don’t send us names and locations of horses who are anything but tail-male to these horses.  That means direct descent in male line only.  If they are devoid of Raise a Native and Northern Dancer, all the better – in fact, we prefer that they be devoid of Raise a Native unless the line comes via Fappiano.

We stress that this amounts to free advertising for these horses, so if you know of a regional breeder with such a sire, tell him to contact us.  The breed is in dire need of diverse bloodlines as it has reached critical mass with the saturation of Northern Dancer and Raise a Native blood.

History tells us that when this happens, those sire lines tend to die out, but due to shuttle sires and huge books, the breed has very few places to go, and so it is imploding and becoming less sound with each successive generation.  Thus anyone who has sires that offer these valuable outcrosses, the breed needs you!

Our first response to the above arrived from "T.C." in Chicago shortly after we posted this request.  Their response (and a couple of our comments in italics) follows:

Mocha Express, from the GRAUSTARK line:

In response to your query on the website regarding largely unadvertised stallions from disappearing sire lines, I would like to submit two individuals.

The first of these is Mocha Express, one of my favorite racehorses of recent vintage:

http://www.pedigreequery.com/mocha+express

Though not free from Northern Dancer, he descends from a sire line we hardly see here any more- that of Ribot through Graustark and Key to the Mint. He was himself a terrific, versatile, sound racehorse. Upon his retirement, he first stood in Iowa, at a farm apparently owned by the family of his owner/trainer. Though presumably well cared for, he wasn’t well advertised, and saw a limited number of very modest mares there. He has since moved to a farm in Minnesota, where he will hopefully be promoted a bit more. At least he has his own website now, which does a nice job of showing him off:

http://www.mochaexpress.us/

This horse has fascinating influences throughout his pedigree, and I’d love to see him luck into a good match or two from what will surely be another small, modest group of mares.

Re Mocha Express:

It should be noted that Graustark is very probably not by *Ribot, but by Swaps.  It should also be noted that Java Gold has another son at stud in Texas, Grand Jewel.  Grand Jewel is tail-female to the Gambetta branch of Reine-de-Course *Rough Shod II, a great sire-producing family, and Mocha Express is tail-female to an Argentibe branch of Reine-de-Course Brulette, also the family of All Along.

Western Playboy/Cowboy King, from the PRINCE ROSE line:

The other stallion I’d like to mention is Western Playboy, another fine racehorse of even more obscure lines:

http://www.pedigreequery.com/western+playboy

Despite my general unfamiliarity with this one’s sire line all the way back to St. Simon, I can’t help but be struck by the racetrack success of virtually every member of it. You may remember Western Playboy himself as a successful racehorse who won the Jim Beam, Bluegrass and Pennsylvania Derby and finished second in the Florida Derby as a 3yo. This was all before I became interested in racing, so I didn’t get to witness it myself, but I do know him as the first millionaire from my home state of Illinois, and as a useful sire here for many years. Unfortunately he was just pensioned as of the first of the year- though in response to a recent inquiry I made, it was mentioned that he is still “licensed for 2007”. What this seems to mean is that he may still be available if someone really wants to breed to him- but that would obviously be the absolute last chance. He is no longer listed on his farm’s website, but an old link or two remains:

http://www.illinoisracingnews.com/westernplayboy.htm

Western Playboy does have one son listed as standing at stud, named Cowboy King:

http://www.pedigreequery.com/cowboy+king

He was not one of his sire’s more successful offspring, and I don’t know anything about him. However, if he’s the only one left holding the key to this line, I can’t help but consider him of value to the breed.

Re Western Playboy and his son, Cowboy King:

This is the Prince Bio branch of Prince Rose, and Western Playboy is tail-female to Reine-de-Course Khara.  This family also produced the fine stallions Habitat and Northfields.

Cowboy King, unraced, is tail-female to Mazurka.  This is also the family of Questionnaire, to which Holy Bull is inbred, Sallust, and Belmont Stakes winner Quadrangle.

Like you, I am concerned with the current level of inbreeding to but a very few fashionable sire lines. I won’t pretend to be as knowledgeable about pedigrees as the people who put together your website obviously are, but I can’t help but believe that in some ways one Cowboy King might be more valuable than a hundred sons of Storm Cat.

I hope this has been of some use.
